Royal Perth Hospital
The construction of the new 40 bed Trauma and Burns unit is located at Royal Perth Hospital and is made up by the following criteria; 25 new trauma beds, 10 new burns beds and 5 new “Combo” beds that can be used for either trauma or burns beds.
This new facility included the demolition of an existing outpatient and podiatry unit, which had occupied approximately 2500m2. The new burns facility has a number of features including isolation walls and ceilings between wards to prevent the transfer of airborne infection within wall cavities and ceiling spaces, negative pressure airlock access doors into the wards to prevent transfer of infection and positive air pressure in the wards with individual temperature and pressure controls.
The wards have also been designed with special radiant heaters to aid in skin re-generation and this enables the staff to create a controlled environment for individual patient recovery. The new air-conditioning system throughout the Burns Unit is fitted with “Hepa” filters which are special high performance supply air filters which control the level of airborne bacteria.
The work was completed in two stages with the Trauma Unit first followed shortly by the Burns Unit.
